Sponsored by the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) and the University Library at UNC-Chapel Hill, and in collaboration with, EDGI and the Internet Archive’s End of Term 2016 project, DataRescue Chapel Hill aims to archive online information and data in danger of disappearing under the current administration. Our event is focused on preserving information and data related to climate change and environmental programs that are identified as high risk for removal from online public access or even deleted.

DataRescue Chapel Hill is a one-day hack-a-thon type event welcome to volunteers from all backgrounds and technical abilities. Following a workflow developed EDGI and the DataRefuge project, we will create trustworthy copies of federal climate change and environmental data. While the Internet Archive has been able to archive many government websites, it is unable to archive other types of information, particularly datasets. DataRescue events are a key piece in ensuring that these datasets are copied. The Internet Archive, and a consortium of research libraries hold these copies and keep them available for public access.
