Paul Jones and Evan Carroll (BSIS, MSIS ’12) to participate in News & Observer forum ‘Social media and the surrender of privacy’

April 25, 2018 | 7:00 pm

On Wednesday, April 25, at 7pm, UNC School of Information and Library Science (SILS) Clinical Professor Paul Jones and SILS Alumnus Evan Carroll (BSIS, MSIS ’12) will join Attorney Catherine Lawson and Duke Professor Philip Napoli in the next installment of the News & Observer’s Community Voices series. The forum, titled ‘Social media and the surrender of privacy,’ will explore the hazards of being tracked and exposed in the online world. The forum will begin with a discussion of social media and privacy issues, followed by a chance for audience members to ask questions.

Jones’ expertise in virtual communities and the legal and social issues relating to networked information and access paired with his experience having his information hacked in the Equifax breach and having his data scraped on Facebook by Cambridge Analytica goes to show that anyone can be impacted by data breaches.

Carroll, a digital marketing expert and author of Your Digital Afterlife: When Facebook, Flickr and Twitter Are Your Estate, What’s Your Legacy?, advises companies daily on how to use data to build customer loyalty.
