Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children Sexual Abuse Prevention Training

November 8, 2017 | 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

The Coalition of Youth Librarians is organizing a free Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children child sexual abuse prevention training for SILS through the YMCA. If you are interested in the training but this date and time does not work for you, we encourage you to attend a free community training.

Let’s all work together to create a safer and kinder world where the next generation can’t say #MeToo.

If you are planning to attend we would like to request that you register your name so we can keep track of attendance, and give our facilitator a more accurate estimate of the size of the group closer to the date. Please feel free to tell your friends outside of SILS about the training–anyone age 18 and older is welcome to attend!

Training description: The Stewards of Children training provides in-depth learning, tools, and practical guidelines to help adults prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. During this award-winning training, you’ll meet survivors who lived through child sexual abuse, experienced its immediate and long-term effects, and ultimately were able to find healing. You’ll meet experts who work with children and families and confront abuse on a daily basis. Lastly, you’ll find concrete steps that you can take to protect the children in your life.

The training is free and the YMCA does not expect donations, but they do accept and appreciate them and use them to sustain the training.

Here is a message from our friends at the YMCA:

Greetings from the Y of the Triangle, thanks for your interest in the Darkness to Light Initiative and the Stewards of Children child abuse awareness and prevention training.

We have begun a new initiative in the Triangle that specifically targets the prevention of child sexual abuse.  The statistics are overwhelming:

  • 1 in 10 children will be sexually abused by the time they are 18
  • We all know children that are being abused
  • We all know children at risk
  • 93% of victims know and trust their molester
  • 400,000+ children in the US are abused each year
  • Child abuse is 100% preventable!

We are building a movement to stop this epidemic. We have initiated a collaboration with the YMCA and several local entities to train 5% of the adult population of Wake, Durham, Orange and Chatham Counties.  This is an unprecedented goal of over 35,000 people, it is a prevention movement that matches the size of the problem. Through the Stewards of Children trainings we can empower and unprecedented number of people with the skills and knowledge to protect children.

The training is:

Powerful: Featuring stories from sexual abuse survivors.

Effective: Shown to change long-term preventative behaviors.

Free: no cost is involved with attending an in-person training.
