All Staff Meeting (9/27/17)

September 27, 2017

Dean Marchionini made a few announcements, namely saying that student recruitment numbers are slightly up from last year, which is great. He also mentioned that UNC is at net-zero use with water, which is awesome! Apparently, all the water that UNC collects in its cisterns is the same amount as what we use on campus. UNC is trying to further reduce waste by installing rideshare bikes around campus, so be on the lookout for those over the next year.

We also discussed CWS and whether instructors should receive course credit for their work. Brian Sturm asked if the faculty were interested in seeing a more formal proposal for course credit from the ad-hoc committee for CWS, and faculty agreed. I will provide another update once a more formal proposal is presented.

We also discussed recruitment for the upcoming round of PhD students. SILS is hoping to have applicants chosen for interviews by January, with a visit day in February.

If you have any questions about anything in this update, please contact Amelea Kim at ameleak@email.unc.edu!

Research & Doctoral Committee Update

September 27, 2017

The committee met on September 20th for the first time of this academic year. During this meeting, we reviewed our agenda and scheduled additional committee activities related to the doctoral program application process. The committee discussed last year’s doctoral program recruitment strategies extensively and will reach out to this year’s cohort of Ph.D. students for feedback. Finally, the committee considered what activities could be organized to support faculty and student research at SILS.

Master’s Committee Meeting

September 27, 2017

The September 6 Master’s Committee meeting addressed two main points: revisions to registration forms, and the comprehensive exam questions.

Revisions to registration forms:

  • Registration forms for INLS 992 (Master’s Paper or Project) and INLS 696 (Independent Study) were separated out by course number. The form remained the same for INLS 696, but the form for INLS 992 was revised to better suit the nature of the Master’s Paper (or Project) course.
  • Clarifications regarding documentation requirements were added to the “Petition to Exempt a Required Course (Graduate)” form.
  • These updated forms can be found at the following link: https://sils.unc.edu/current-students/forms

Comprehensive exam questions:

The Committee faculty discussed how to approach the formation of upcoming comprehensive exam questions. These are based off of the learning objectives listed in the Program Mission/Goals sections of the MSLS and MSIS overview web pages, and are the same between the MSLS and MSIS degrees. For convenience, the links to both overview pages are provided below:

*October’s Master’s Committee meeting will be dedicated to faculty training on application management software. The next meeting involving student representatives will occur in early November.

Community Workshop Series

August 31, 2017

We’ve already started teaching our Community Workshop Series (CWS) classes for the fall, and we’d love to get more people involved. Visit our website to get more information! http://cws.web.unc.edu/

You can view our schedule of classes for the fall, including dates, times, and locations here.

If you’re interested in having more information emailed to you in the future, you can fill out the form here. You only need to include your name and email address but additional information will help us build a program that fits the needs of our volunteers.

We’ll be having an interest/informational meeting soon. The date and location will be sent out once we have it solidified. We’ll also have two different training opportunities to develop pedagogical skills: one three hour session or a series of three hour sessions. We’ll focus on adult learning theory, inquiry-based learning, digital literacy education, and working with multilingual students. The training will primarily be conducted by employing the pedagogy to teach the pedagogy (i.e. using adult learning theory to teach adult learning theory) through activities, discussion, and practice.

If you have previous experience teaching, and would like to get started right away teaching classes, feel free to email me at mattj@live.unc.edu, and I can set you up with a class that works for you.

The sign up to teach classes will be available after the information session, so keep an eye out.
