DataRescue Chapel Hill

February 27, 2017

Join us for a #DataRescue event to save federal climate change and environmental data at risk of disappearing.

Date/Time: March 4, 2017 | 10:00am – 4:00pm

Location: Research Hub, Davis Library, 208 Raleigh Road

RSVP and up-to-date information: http://datarescue.web.unc.edu/

Bring: laptops, power bars and snacks

Sponsored by the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) and the University Library at UNC-Chapel Hill, and in collaboration with datarefuge.org, EDGI and the Internet Archive’s End of Term 2016 project, DataRescue Chapel Hill aims to archive online information and data in danger of disappearing under the current administration. Our event is focused on preserving information and data related to climate change and environmental programs that are identified as high risk for removal from online public access or even deleted.

DataRescue Chapel Hill is a one-day hack-a-thon type event welcome to volunteers from all backgrounds and technical abilities. Following a workflow developed EDGI and the DataRefuge project, we will create trustworthy copies of federal climate change and environmental data. While the Internet Archive has been able to archive many government websites, it is unable to archive other types of information, particularly datasets. DataRescue events are a key piece in ensuring that these datasets are copied. The Internet Archive, datarefuge.org and a consortium of research libraries hold these copies and keep them available for public access. For more information visit our website:  http://datarescue.web.unc.edu/

We are seeking volunteers who are (any of the following):

  • Knowledgeable about Climate Agencies and Programs
  • Knowledgeable about Environmental Agencies and Programs
  • Have an environmental studies or science background
  • Archivists, Librarians, Electronic Records Managers, or Digital Curators
  • Concerned about the environment
  • Eager to help in any way
