New Student Outreach Coordinator, Information and Library Science Student Association

About the Candidate and Platform

Hey all! I am a first-year LS student and I am interested in becoming the New Student Outreach Coordinator! As a naturally more introverted person, I’ve always benefitted from outreach programming as a way to meet people/make friends and get to know a new environment (in this case, SILS, UNC’s campus, Chapel Hill, the Triangle area, etc.) and I would love to take on a leadership position to promote a welcoming culture of outreach. I am originally from Chicago and came to UNC as an undergraduate from New York, knowing no one and nothing about the South or UNC, really. Over four years, I met a lot of awesome, interesting and brilliant people and got to know the best parts of the campus, state and Southern culture and I love passing on that knowledge to others. My approach to the office would be friendly and active, but not aggressively so! I’m not into forcing people to do icebreakers, but I do think that options for networking, bonding, etc., especially for new students, should be available for those who need or want them. If elected, I would continue the mentoring program, as well as the Week of Welcome Events. I think it would also be great to find more ways to connect new students to each other, as well as to second-year and PhD students, perhaps based on academic/professional interests, or non-academic interests in hobbies. Some other ideas I have are to organize study groups for new students during the first semester of school, and social events outside of Chapel Hill for students who may live in other parts of the Triangle or NC, such as Durham or Raleigh. Even though SILS students are here to get a degree, I want everyone to enjoy their time here and being elected New Student Outreach Coordinator would be a great way for me to contribute to that process early on!
