Vice President, Special Libraries Association

About the Candidate and Platform

Hello everyone, my name is Katie R. Herring and I am running for Vice President of SLA.

As Vice President of SLA, I plan on working closely with the president to strengthen our student chapter of SLA. I agree and support her ideas of fostering a community that promotes diverse programs, increasing exposure to non-traditional libraries, and having networking events that connect us with our community. Strengthening our relationship with CSLA (the Carolina chapter), as well as with national SLA, is a goal I have for this upcoming year. I would like to increase participation of CSLA events as well as national SLA events.

I graduated with a B.S. in biological sciences and a B.A. in English literature from Virginia Tech this spring. While at Tech, I worked at Special Collections all four years, and for the last two years, was a Writing Coach at the Writing Center. I have had several internships within the library field, including a public library, a public archives, and working with the Papers of George Washington at the University of Virginia. These work opportunities have solidified my desire to enter the information science sector, and my current job, as a library intern at the Environmental Protection Agency in Research Triangle Park, has piqued my interest in special libraries.

I have held two leadership positions recently, both during my last two years of college. I was co-president and then president of Golden Key International Honour Society, and treasurer of the Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society. This leadership experience will guide me as the vice president of SLA.

My ideas for the organization, work and leadership experience, as well as my passion for special libraries, make me an excellent candidate for the Vice President position.
